Palpable fear has gripped residents of Calabar metropolis in Cross
River State as gunmen allegedly kidnapped the Labour Party (LP), House
of Representatives candidate, Dominic Aqua Edem.
Aqua said to be in his early 50s, was a former deputy speaker of the
state House of Assembly and immediate past commissioner, representing
the state at NDDC Board, who defected from Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) to LP after the primaries.
Until he was abducted, he was vying for the Calabar
South/Akapbuyo/Bakassi Federal constituency seat in the 2015 general
elections.
His kidnap is coming barely four weeks after three businessmen,
including officials of IPMAN Calabar branch were kidnapped in Calabar
and released after the families had paid ransom.
An eyewitness account stated that the former deputy speaker was
kidnapped yesterday at about 8.00pm at his residence located on Essien
Street in Calabar South when he was returning home after his campaign
activities.
The account further said the gang numbering about five, laid siege
outside his house pretending to be some of his boys waiting to see him.
On his return, the hoodlums followed him into the compound, seized him
and took him away to an unknown destination.
A family source, which gave his name simply as Inynag, told Daily Sun
that though the matter had been reported to the police, no contact had
been established with the gunmen.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Hogan Bassey, did not respond to the calls put across to him.
