BEIJING: Action star Jackie Chan's son, Jaycee, held a
media conference in Bejing on Saturday (Feb 14) afternoon to apologise
for his actions, after serving a six-month jail term for providing a
venue for drug use.
"As a public figure, this incident has negatively affected society and disappointed those who support me as well as caused those who worked with me to suffer losses. I do not have a reason, and do not have an excuse. I have done wrong," Chinese media reports quoted Jaycee as saying.
"After this incident, I have changed my outlook on life and my values. In the past, I really did not know how to cherish everything around me. I said in court that although I have received punishment from the law, it does not mean I have received society's forgiveness, because trust needs to be earned gradually over time.
"What I need to do right now is to apologise to society for my mistakes. I am really sorry, I will be a law-abiding person from now on."
Dressed in a black suit, the actor also re-iterated during a question-and-answer session that his father did not pull strings to get him a lighter sentence, and that he was treated like any other inmate while he was in jail.
Neither Jaycee's mother, Joan Lin Fengjiao, nor his father attended the media conference. The elder Chan had previously explained he could not attend as he is busy promoting his new film Dragon Blade. Responding to reporters' questions, Jaycee Chan said he did not want Lin to come as he knows his mother is afraid of meeting the media, and would have wanted his father to put his work first.
"I know my parents love me a lot. It is my mistake and I have to take responsibility for it," said Chan, adding that his parents did not chide him after his release, but only encouraged him to do his work well, change for the better, and never repeat his mistakes.
"I hope to apologise to them properly and celebrate the Chinese New Year with them."
Chan went on to reveal that he is not sure if he will still have opportunities in showbiz, but intends to direct a film and write more music in the future.
