Heinous attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in various agrarian villages of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State has resulted to the death of about 22 persons.
Several houses have been razed and scores of farmers displaced.
This is coming just as Governor Gabriel Suswam yesterday paid an assessment visit to the affected communities to evaluate the level of damage, bring succour to the displaced persons and enhance security in the affected areas.
LEADERSHIP gathered that hundreds of suspected Fulani militia armed with dangerous weapons had attacked Anyebe, Ayilamo, Chembe, Tse-Mue, Ifer, Mgbakpa and Oragbai villages from the Ukemberagya council ward of Logo LGA.
They accessed the farming Benue communities in the night, through the border villages of Taraba State.
Yesterday, it was gathered that the gunmen were heading to destroy Anyiin, the hometown of Governor Gabriel Suswam. But the timely visit of Suswam to the area may possibly avert further attacks on the villages.
The special assistant to the governor on media and public affairs, Mr. Joseph Anawa, an indigene of the area who spoke to LEADERSHIP from Logo, on phone yesterday , said the gunmen have killed over 20 people, burnt houses and destroyed farmlands.
The police public relations officer, DSP John Bako Bako confirmed the attacks to newsmen yesterday. He however said, “we have deployed our men to the area to maintain peace and efforts are seriously being made to open talks with the feuding parties in order to quell the crisis.”
