Review the royal family's line of succession to the throne

1. Queen Elizabeth II
Born: April 21, 1926

Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne on Feb. 6, 1952, after the death of her father, King George VI. The queen, who is married to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, has four children. Over her 63-year reign, the queen has presided at countless ceremonial occasions throughout the U.K. and its former colonies. She has also had weekly meetings with each of her of the 12 prime ministers who have served under her.

2. Charles, Prince of Wales
Born: Nov. 14, 1948

Line of succession: First

Prince Charles, the oldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, is first in line to the throne. He is the first heir to earn a college degree and has commanded a Royal Navy minesweeper. The public rejoiced when Charles wed Diana Spencer in 1981, but the long collapse of the marriage and perceptions that Charles mistreated Diana damaged his public standing. They had two sons, William and Harry, and divorced in 1996. A year later, Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. In 2005, after a lengthy association, he married Camilla Parker Bowles in a civil ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor. He has won respect for his charity and activist work and is expected to be a more interventionist monarch than his mother.

3. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge
Born: June 21, 1982

Line of succession: Second

According to wsj Prince William is the oldest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. He is second in line to the throne. He studied at St. Andrews in Scotland and later joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an officer cadet. He married Catherine Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, in 2011 and the royal couple had their first child, Prince George, in 2013.

4. Prince George
Born: July 22, 2013

Line of succession: Third

The son of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, George Alexander Louis, is formally known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. He is third in line to the throne behind his father, Prince William, and grandfather, Prince Charles.

5. Princess Charlotte
Born: May 2, 2015

Line of succession: Fourth

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby daughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, will be fourth in line to the throne. After a change in the law in 2013, any daughter born to the duke and duchess will enjoy an equal right to inherit the British throne. Previously, the crown would have passed to the eldest son and would have only gone to the daughter if there were no sons.

6. Prince Harry
Born: Sept. 15, 1984

Line of succession: Fifth

Prince Harry is the youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and will be fifth in line to the throne. With little chance of ever becoming Britain’s king, Harry has earned a reputation as a wild child with British tabloids having closely chronicling his nightclubbing in London’s hot spots.
