Emmanuel Adebayor: Granted compassionate leave by Tottenham

Emmanuel Adebayor has been granted compassionate leave by Tottenham to return to Togo to sort out family issues following worrying social media posts by the player.

It is the second time this season that Spurs have given the striker compassionate leave.

The decision means Adebayor is excused from training this week and will miss the final game of the season against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, as well as the post-season tour to Malaysia and Sydney.

Court adjourns ruling in suit challenging DStv’s new subscription fees

A Federal High Court in Lagos has further adjourned till May 28, 2015 to rule on the preliminary objection to a suit seeking the reversal of the recent 20 per cent increment on DStv subscription rate.

Two Lagos-based legal practitioners, Osasuyi Adebayo and Oluyinka Oyeniji, had filed the class action on behalf of themselves and all other DStv subscribers across the country.

The plaintiffs are seeking an order of the court restraining MultiChoice, the operator of DStv, from implementing the 20 per cent increment on DStv subscription rate which began on April 1, 2015.

An airline steward who tried to smuggle fake passports by hiding them in a pair of specially adapted underpants has been jailed for five years.

A 59-year old man, Shaukat Ali Cheema, 59, has been arrested at Birmingham airport in March after 26 passports and 37 passport biodata pages were discovered in his briefs.

Border force staff also found 13 driving licences which Cheema, a senior steward with Pakistan International Airlines, had concealed in pockets and compartments sewn into the pants.

Ahmed Mohammed, the presiding judge over former Governor of Kwara state, Bukola Saraki's case in Abuja Federal High Court has cleared the ex-governor of all the allegation about bank loan scam being investigated by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigerian Police since 2012.

The Officer-in-charge of the Osiele Police Post, Abeokuta, Ogun State, John Mafoya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has been arrested and is being quizzed at the state police command headquarters for allegedly raping a student of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, identified simply as Oluwaseun.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Mafoya was arrested after some students of the college reported the matter at the Odeda Police Division. The case was afterwards transferred to the state command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Our correspondent gathered that on Thursday, April 30, policemen from the Osiele post arrested Oluwaseun for her involvement in a mob attack on a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps in the college, identified only as Oladimeji.

Policemen demand N65,000 to rescue kidnap victim

The family of an Anglican Church cleric, Rev. Louis Nebo, says policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Enugu State Police Command demanded N65,000 to rescue the man of God from the kidnappers’ den.

It was learnt that N15,000 of the sum had allegedly been paid to the operatives before the kidnappers contacted the family, demanding N10m ransom.

Louis, 57, was reportedly kidnapped by some masked gunmen around Umumba Ndi Uno in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state last Saturday.

18-year–old bride kills husband four days after their marriage

Tragedy struck yesterday at Ubomiri community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State when a 20-year-old girl allegedly stabbed her undergraduate lover to death with a kitchen knife in their house.

The suspect, Chisom Anyanwu who is a student of Akwakuama Girls Secondary School, Owerri had allegedly killed his lover, who visited her following an argument.

An actress who weighs nothing more than '40 pounds and is close to death has released a video on YouTube describing her fight against the life-threatening eating disorder and soliciting for help from the masses to enable her get treatment.

The 37-year old Rachael Farrokh, from Southern California has been battling anorexia nervosa for more than 10 years.

In the video released by Mail online, she explains how her condition has severely declined in recent months, leaving her emaciated, breathless and too weak to move around on her own at her San Clemente home.

A security man has met his untimely death after he went on a drinking and smoking bet with the people he met at a joint..

The late Thompson had a bet with others that her can drink a bottle of a popular alcoholic drink and smoke five sticks of cigarette in two minutes, a bet he won but sadly lost his life to it. Friends

The incident happened at Agege area of Lagos on May 7, after the deceased bought bottles of Ogogoro (local gin) for his drinking companions, who then challenged him to finish a bottle of bitters and smoke five sticks of cigarette within a stipulated time.

The Vice President-elect, Prof. Yomi Osinbajo, has said the Muhammadu Buhari-led government will inherit the worst economy ever in the history of the nation.

Also, a former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has advised Buhari to take advantage of the country’s current level of public support for him to take hard decisions.

Osinbajo and Blair spoke during the opening of a two-day Policy Dialogue on the Implementation of the Agenda for Change, which began in Abuja on Wednesday.

The US Geographical Survey reported that a 6.9-magnitude earthquake and a follow-up of 4.9-magnitute aftershock has struck off the Solomon Islands in the Pacific, but no tsunami warning was issued and no major damage was expected.

The quake hit at a depth of 19km, about 184km from the town of Lata and 487km from the capital Honiara.

It was followed by a smaller 4.9-magnitude aftershock.

“Based on all available data there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Anxiety on Tuesday gripped ministers and other top government officials in Abuja ahead of the last meeting of the Federal Executive Council under the Goodluck Jonathan administration scheduled to hold on Wednesday (yesterday).

The apprehension was triggered by a report (not by The PUNCH) credited to the Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, that President Goodluck Jonathan would dissolve his cabinet during a “valedictory session” of the FEC on Wednesday(yesterday).

But Akwashiki on Tuesady refuted the report and urged the general public to disregard it as “false and malicious.”

Following controversies trailing the Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole's wedding to his much younger wife and how a random guy, an Instagram user claimed to know the girl very well and how she had slept with most of the Nigerian politicians, Read it up (here) if you missed it. Oshiomhole made the revelation during the testimony time at a thanksgiving service organised for him for his wedding to his Cape Verdian heartthrob in his church..

There has been crises in PDP with its top officials and members resigning and defecting to APC. The Chairman to the Party's BoT, Chief Tony Anenih has also resigned.

His resignation, which was confirmed by Prof. Adewale Oladipo the National Secretary of the PDP, came few hours after the party’s national chairman also toed the same line.

Oladipo in a statement said, “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received the resignation of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our great party on personal grounds". In accepting the resignation the NWC noted the outstanding contributions of Chief Anenih in the party over the years especially in his capacity as the Board of Trustees Chairman.

“As one of the founding fathers of the PDP, the NWC appreciates Chief Anenih’s guiding role in the party in the last 16 years and wish him well in his future endeavours.
Consequent upon the resignation, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin holds forth pending the election of a new BoT Chairman”.

Makinwa sympathises with Adebayor, urges him to calm and forgive his family

The Togolese forward, Emmanuel Adebayo who has been in fracas with his family and exposing them using different social media channels has been consoled and advised by the former Nigeria international, Henry Makinwa, to let go of his bitterness, anger and unhappiness towards his family and end his criticism or accusation against his family.

The 31-year old footballer has recently been exposing the issues he has with his family members on the social media in a series of posts, which are targeted at different members of the family.

The latest of such was on Wednesday when he alleged that his late brother, Peter, and elder brother, Kola, had tried to kill him among many other things.

It has been reported that food inspectors have passed an order asking Nestle for recalling Maggi noodles batch from shops all over India in view of the fact that it consists harmful lead level.

FDA (Food Safety and Drug Administration) in UP maintained that in the random sample test performed on 24 packs of Maggi, the product is revealed to have high level of lead which is more than the permissible limit.

A right activist and a journalist, Moussa Tchangari popularly known for his outspoken criticism of the humanitarian crisis in Southeastern Niger has been arrested for “collaborating” with Boko Haram Islamists. An arrest that has been condenmed by all including the human rights watchdog Amnesty International.

“This man has been collaborating with Boko Haram for some time, and he is actively spreading propaganda and false news in liaison with Boko Haram,” Interior Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou told AFP.“All his propaganda aims to show… that Niger’s defence and security forces are the criminals… (and) not Boko Haram.”Niger cannot “tolerate such an active collaboration with terrorists”, or such “systematic spreading of false news”

Nollywood Actor, Femi Robinson Dies At 75

Mr. Femi Robinson, A Nollywood veteran actor, popularly known in the industry as the Village Headmaster, the role he played in the television series by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) died on Wednesday.

His death was made public by his two sons Seun and Wole Robinson, on his Facebook page in a message that read:

“This is to notify you that we lost our father, Femi Robinson this morning – Seun & Wole Robinson (sons).”

Although the cause of his death was yet to be ascertained, reports said he probably died due to old age related issues. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

There was pandemonium in Ekiti on Wednesday as transport workers and Hausa traders engaged in a free for all in Erekesan market, Oja Oba in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The crisis took place a day after the resumption of a new Commissioner of Police, Etop John James, in the state.

The violence later spread from Erekesan Market –Old Garage –Mugbagba axis to Atikankan area, a converging point for many Hausa traders in the state.

Nadirah Muhammad doesn't like to be called a hero, but she's certainly a life-saver.

The physical education and health teacher at Detroit's West Side Academy donated a kidney late last year to one of her students, 18-year-old A'Ja Booth.

Booth returned to school today for the first time since the surgery, walking arm-in-arm with Muhammad down a red carpet in the gymnasium as fellow students threw sparkling confetti.

Gunmen abduct President Jonathan's cousins

Two cousins of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Egbeni and Kate Eni, have been abducted by gunmen at Akimpelai, Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State.

Report says some gunmen; about seven in number seized the women from the community riverbank at about 8.30am on Tuesday and whisked them to an unknown location.

The women who own provisions stores along the riverbank were reportedly whisked from their stores.

Family and friends gathered over the weekend asBobby Brown and his wife Alicia Etheredge Brown celebrated the upcoming arrival of their bundle of joy. And guess what? The couple is expecting a baby girl soon!

The past few months have been tragic for Bobby as his daughter Bobbi Kristina continues to fight for her life in a hospital, Bobby was able to find some joy in celebrating the upcoming birth of his sixth child and the 6th birthday of the couple's son Cassius.
