No fewer than five persons lost their lives after a church building collapsed in Enugu State on Saturday.
The affected building ─ the Cathedral of St. Anthony Catholic Church ─ in Oduma, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, collapsed during a rehearsal for the Sunday service.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the priest of the church, Rev. Fr. Nonso Eze, was conducting rehearsals ahead of the Sunday Mass with some members of the church when a section of the alter collapsed.
No fewer than five persons were said to have died instantly, while one worshiper sustained an ankle fracture.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 9pm after a downpour.
Other eyewitnesses, however, said the worshipers were in a prayer meeting when the incident occurred.
The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, said the incident was being investigated.
“An investigation has commenced into the incident just as the bodies of the deceased persons have been deposited at Jideofor Hospital Mortuary, Awgu,” Amaraizu said.
