BORNO: Explosion Rocks Army Checkpoint In Biu Killing Many People

An explosion has occurred at Biu entry checkpoint along the Maiduguri highway in Borno State, killing scores of people mostly hawkers, a resident has said.

The entry checkpoint, located at the northern part of the town, is being controlled by military and members of the Youth Volunteer popularly called “Civilian JTF”.

Biu is the largest Borno town in the southern part of the state located 187 kilometres south of Maiduguri, the state capital.

A member of the Biu “Civilian JTF” involved in the rescue of those affected in the explosion said some young members of the group were also affected in the explosion that occurred on Monday.

He said suspected members of the Boko Haram insurgents are believed to be behind the attack.

It was a failed attempt to smuggle the Improvised Explosive Devices into Biu town, with the aim of wreaking havoc on innocent people. But the devices exploded at the checkpoint, the Civilian JTF member said.

Monday’s blast in Biu is coming five days after a suicide bomber detonated strapped explosive at Biu central market in Borno, killing 15 civilians and injuring several others.

There is no confirmation of the casualty figure.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
